Lamps in good light - selection of luminaires, and high glazing

19 of September '24

Giant glazing is a symbol of modern architecture, and its use is gaining popularity in residential construction as well. It means opening up to the surrounding landscape, more natural light in the interior, as well as blurring the boundaries between the living area and the garden.
Weronika Plonska - coordinator of Nowodvorski Lighting's design sales department - talks about the benefits, but also the challenges of designing lighting in such interiors

High terrace doors, windows running across two floors, or even glazing the entire facade is a reality that opens up new possibilities, but also challenges for residential interior design, including in the context of selecting artificial lighting.

Not only glazing is responsible for the amount of light in the interiors. The positioning of the building in relation to the sides of the world, the height and density of the surrounding buildings or trees, and even the level of the floor or the part of the city in which we live are also significant. That's why it's so important to choose the type and amount of lighting taking into account various factors and the fact that we should derive comfort from its use also in the evenings or during the autumn-winter period, says Weronika Plonska.

functional light even after dark

Even the most illuminated interiors, i.e. usually those with southern and western exposure, need achoice of lighting that takes into account the diverse needs of users. This is especially important in the living area, where we often stay at the same time as other household members.

Living room, kitchen or dining room are places that in modern construction are usually designed with an open plan. This means that the type of lighting chosen in one of these rooms will also affect the perception of the others. In addition, high spaces usually go hand in hand with significant interior square footage and above-standard height. This is an additional challenge that should be taken into account when designing not only decorative, but also functional lighting," Nowodvorski Lighting expert stresses.

The challenges of lighting interiors with high glazing, especially those built on an open plan, are answered by the use of busbars. Their installation offers freedom in the selection of the number and type of luminaires, and once a decision is made it can be easily changed - simply plug the luminaire into another location or replace it with a new one. In spaces with high variability in access to natural light, especially those combining several zones - such as the living room with the kitchen, it is worth considering multi-circuit solutions.

CTLS (COMMERCIAL TRACK LIGHTS SYSTEM) by Nowodvorski Lighting is a three-circuit system that allows you to use only the group of lamps you deem necessary at any given time. This solution is ideal for spaces with large glazing, where the difference in access to natural lighting is very noticeable, because just as they are bathed in sunlight during the day, they are enveloped in darkness in the evenings and during autumn and winter, suggests Weronika Plonska.

An alternative to rail systems are hanging lamps and plafonds, whose height, as well as the size and form of the lampshade, however, should also be adapted to the requirements of the glazed interior, as well as thefunction they are to perform in it.

Among the decorative solutions worth special attention are our novelties this year, such as the PUMPKIN models, enveloping with a subtle glow, or HAITI, delighting with the effect of playing light and shadow on the wall. Both models are available in three different sizes which allows you to enhance the decorative effect with a composition-based arrangement, the expert adds.

Kitchen without revolution, bedroom with atmosphere - that is, light in the foreground

In conditions of good sunlight, a kitchen with windows overlooking the spaceallows you to work in workspaces often also without using additional lighting. However, when the sun changes position during the day or long holiday days are behind us, it is worth betting on solutions aimed at our needs - literally and figuratively.

Here, too, busbars are ideal, which offer a wide range of selection possibilities, for example, in terms of moving light sources, suggests Weronika Plonska.
A bedroom bathed in sunlight during the day has its own charm, but at nighttime we appreciate the light that gently envelops, allows us to calm down and inspires us to sleep. It is worth betting here on luminaires with a milky aperture and material finish of the lampshade, such as TURDA, CHILLIN or CADILAC from the Nowodvorski Lighting collection, advises Weronika Plonska.

Regardless of the type of space, in places where we read, work or children do their homework it is good to bet on standing, portable or desk lamps, and enhance the atmospheric atmosphere with complementary lighting - such as wall lamps. It is important to take care of a consistent arrangement effect at the same time, which can be helped, for example, by selecting fixtures within one collection.

The MONO, LASER or FOURTY series by Nowodvorski Lighting includes spotlights, as well as wall lamps or solutions with a strong decorative effect, even with several points of light in one fixture. They are available both in the version mounted to rails, as well as in the form of standard solutions mounted directly to the wall or ceiling, says the expert.
